LG AI Research joins LG Discovery Lab’s AI education program.

LG Discovery Lab is an AI education program for teenagers developed by affiliates of LG. Teenagers can participate in the AI education program devised by LG at the education centers in Seoul and Busan. The first unveiled space is LG Discovery Lab Busan, a new AI education center replacing LG Science Hall Busan that has served as a landmark of science education in Busan for the last 20 years. The previous LG Science Hall was a science center mainly holding hands-on exhibitions, whereas LG Discovery Lab serves as an education center whose strong point is AI education. The program caters to middle school students in Busan and Gyeongnam; currently, reservations can be made by schools if students wish to join the program.

LG AI Research and other LG affiliates are engaged in LG Discovery Lab to provide education that enhances teenagers’ understanding of AI. To offer values differentiated from other AI education taught as public activities by businesses, the Lab produced AI technology-oriented tools that are used in actual LG factories, products, and services, providing AI education blended deeply into our daily life based on an understanding of fundamentals. The Lab also contributes to nurturing South Korea’s prospective young AI minds through long-term self-learning AI programs. A close bond can be established between LG and teenagers who are LG’s potential future customers and executives through events like hackathon. The Lab aims to make a social contribution by offering a wider scope of education not only for students but also for teachers and parents.

When visiting LG Discovery Lab, the first thing you will see is LG’s AI technology-embedded products including robots displayed in the exhibition hall. Visitors may touch and operate the devices. The education aims to realize a “Full Spectrum” of AI education through diverse programs from understanding the technological process to LG AI Research's lectures and lessons on how to use products that have been created based on LG’s know-how in AI businesses, so you can expect a whole range of systematic education programs.

Learning AI language skills from LG AI Research

LG Discovery Lab offers diverse education programs of AI applications in LG, and AI technologies can be briefly categorized into 5 keywords: robot, visual intelligence, language intelligence, digital human, and data intelligence. Among them, LG AI Research offers an education program in the language intelligence sector by utilizing language analysis such as MRC (Machine Reading Comprehension) and Text to Video.

The language intelligence education program established by LG AI Research enables participants to understand the roles and functions of text as the basis of MRC and Text to Video. Then participants write text on their own, learn data through the AI system application, and check the result. The direction of education and curriculum was made by reflecting the parents and students’ demands for content and education method in the current AI curriculum. The hands-on program is created based on the language model developed by LG AI Research.

LG AI Research’s MRC is a technology that answers users’ questions based on the understanding of documents. The AI technology understands questions, analyzes the content of documents, and gives answers when students select newspapers and books that they are interested in and ask questions about them.

LG AI Research’s MRC model uses a pre-train model in transformer structure. Transformer is an Attention-based model with encoder-decoder structure announced by Google. It reflects grammatical and semantic language characteristics using mass language data. MRC is completed in the process of understanding Q&A and seeking answers after fine-tuning for sub-tasks for a new goal, enabling Q&A based on the pre-train model. Here, understanding, learning, and tuning units of linguistic characteristics of the Korean language are applied during the pre-train modeling and fine-tuning phase.

The MRC technology used in the hands-on program is based on the Korean language model developed by LG AI Research on its own, applying the technology learned from the experience of topping the list in KorQuAD (Korean Question Answering Dataset 1.0), the leader board of Q&A in Korean, in July 2020. LG AI Research developed not only the Korean but also English MRC technology, which also ranked 1st in SQuAD (Stanford Question Answering Dataset) 1.1 in July this year.

Operating the language intelligence program in LG Discovery Lab Busan ⓒLG Discovery Lab

Teenagers can learn by heart how the AI technology can change the future at LG Discovery Lab, a space for dreaming of the future. The LG Discovery Lab opened in Busan aims to connect diverse visitors by holding OPEN DAY for Residents in November. LG Discovery Lab will also open in Magok, Seoul in 2022, aiming to provide a wide range of AI education program experience opportunities to teenagers.
