On January 17, two events to celebrate were held at LG AI Research. The 2021 LG Master of AI Degree Award Ceremony and AI Expert Course (previously “Advanced Problem-Solving Course”) Performance Sharing Meeting was held in the morning and afternoon respectively. LG live streamed the two events on Webex due to COVID-19. Although only a few people joined the events in person, many were able to review the achievements and share gratitude and encouragement they felt in the long course of time.
Cultivating AI experts, the 2021 LG Master of AI Degree Award Ceremony
The 2021 LG Master of AI Course is a pilot course of LG AI Graduate School which is officially scheduled to open in 2022. Talents from four affiliate companies enrolled and graduated the AI Master’s Course. The course was set up in the form of nine-month-dispatch from March 29 to December 17 in 2021. The trainees acquired high level problem-solving capability during the course by studying latest AI theses and cases under the guidance of research experts.

Kyunghoon Bae, President of the LG AI Graduate School
Kyunghoon Bae, President of the LG AI Graduate School, as well as leaders who guided the trainees and faculty members of AI Academy sector who operates LG AI Graduate School joined the Award Ceremony at Vision Hall, LG Science Park to congratulate and encourage the graduates. President Bae announced that LG AI Research will become LG Group’s official AI master's and doctorate program starting this year and praised the graduates who temporarily left the field to dedicate themselves in AI research for nine months. Bae also requested the first alumni of LG AI Graduate School to play a big role in LG as AI experts.

Graduates of 2021 LG Master of AI Course
The first graduates of LG Master of AI Course are Senior Byeongkeun Kang (LG Display), Professional Seokjin Yun (LG Chem), Professional Daerim Cho (LG Innotek), and Associate Gyuin Han (LG CNS). The subject of the papers are as follow: Display Pixel Layout Design with Deep Reinforcement Learning by Senior Kang; Tracking and Segmentation for Swelling Behavior of Multiple SAP Particles by Professional Yoon; Research on temporal convolutional network based product demand prediction methods in an incomplete data environment by Professional Cho; and Optimizing Dense Retrieval Considering Document Similarity by Associate Han; Kang’s paper was selected as the best paper among them. Graduates who passed the graduate school’s paper review earn the official LG Group Master's Degree.

The graduates will contribute to the LG Group as AI experts by solving problems in their own industry and leading projects after going back to work. “I wish to be part of such opportunity again if there’s one in the future,” said Professional Cho of LG Innotek, one of the graduates. “I want to thank LG AI Research for the wonderful course and everyone who supported me to focus on my research.”
Solving problems in the real field, the 2021 AI Expert Course 2nd Completion Ceremony and Performance Sharing Meeting
2021 AI Expert Course 2nd Completion Ceremony and Performance Sharing Meeting was held in the evening on the same day at Idea Room on the third floor of ISC. AI Expert Course is a program where researchers of LG AI Research provide one-on-one mentoring to workers of LG affiliate companies to solve problems on site. The name of the course which was referred to as “AI Advanced Problem-Solving Course” changed to “AI Expert Course” starting this year.

The 2021 2nd Course was a 12-week-course which was held three times a week from September 7 to December 2. 17 members of LG affiliate companies and researchers of LG AI Research formed mentor-mentee relationships and solved problems of the site. The AI Expert Course Completion Ceremony and Performance Sharing Meeting are to congratulate 17 trainees that completed the course and announce three BPs (Best Practices) among them.

The Meeting began with congratulatory message by Jungkyu Choi, Leader of Language Lab where two out of three members were selected as BP. “AI brings meaningful performance only when it is fed with real issues and data from the site,” said Lab Leader Choi, giving congratulatory remarks. “I’m really proud of AI Research and affiliate companies for such a fruitful result.”
BPs were selected by evaluation of experts — 60% from internal judges of the LG AI Research and 40% from LG Group executives and employees. The top 3 BPs are as follows: 1st BP ranked by Associate Byunghyun La of LG Innotek on the research of “AI Automation of Electronic Payment Review”(Mentor: Changwook Jun, Language Lab); 2nd BP ranked by Senior Myunghwan Song of LG Electronics on the research of “Development of LG home appliance chatbot based on document extraction”(Mentor: Hyun Kim, Language Lab); and 3rd BP ranked by Senior Kyuhong Choe of LG Chem on the research of “Development of a new antigen prediction model for the development of personalized cancer treatments”(Mentor: Kiyung Kim, Materials Informatics Lab)

In particular, Associate La's research of Automation of Electronic Payment Review to enhance efficiency of employees' laborious document review was applied to LG Innotek's employee portal of Safety Environment Team. “It was meaningful to study the latest papers which are not easy to read without support and apply the technology in real life,” said Associate La. “I learned that I can bear fruits even in new fields if I try hard and earned confidence that I can solve other issues.”
Changwook Jun of Language Lab who has been joining the program as a mentor every year since 2019 and the mentor of Associate La gave his remarks on behalf of the mentors of LG AI Research. “I was touched by the passion and perseverance of mentees,” said Jun. “Seeing mentee La devoting himself for 12 weeks traveling from and to Gumi and Seoul made me rethink about my attitude towards my life. I would like to sincerely praise for his hard work.”

2021 LG Master of AI Degree Award Ceremony and AI Expert Course Performance Sharing Meeting served as a great moment to look back on LG AI Research’s training programs and effort to enhance AI capabilities. It was also an opportunity to enhance expectation of the next step of LG AI Graduate School and AI Expert Course which will be on a solid path in 2022. LG AI Research will provide a range of education and programs to nurture more AI experts and apply best practices in the future.
