LG AI Research Continues to Recruit New AI Researchers, Creating Exciting Synergy Between an Expert and a Rising Researcher

LG AI Research is expected to show substantial growth through its continuous recruitment of new AI researchers.

LG AI Research recently recruited Jungyun Seo, a professor at Sogang University, as the AI Talent Development Supervisor, and Moontae Lee, a professor at the University of Illinois (USA), as the leader of Fundamental Research Lab.

Professor Jungyun Seo is a pioneer in the field of natural language processing (NLP) and is recognized as one of the best scholars in said field. He published 403 papers on NLP, and is currently serving as the president of the Smart Digital Research Society at the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK) and a co-president of Korea Information Science Education Federation (KiSEF). Professor Seo has been training AI specialists for a long time in academia, and is one of the experts that drove the policy on the expansion of software education South Korea. He will be in charge of discovering and fostering new talents to strengthen the capacities of LG Group’s AI specialists.

Moontae Lee, a professor at the University of Illinois (USA) joined LG AI Research earlier this year. He is an AI specialist who completed his master's degree in computer science at Stanford University and doctorate degree in computer science at Cornell University; his area of specialization is NLP. A number of papers written by Professor Lee were presented at the world’s most prestigious AI conferences, such as Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) and International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), even speaking as a guest lecturer at Microsoft Research. He is a rising researcher who leads the latest AI research trends. Professor Lee is currently leading research related to the prior technologies of super-giant AI in the LG AI Research and the future direction of machine learning.

The two professors will also study how to apply the language model of EXAONE—LG’s super-giant AI model—as well as ethical problems related to AI, such as data bias. In particular, Professor Seo was Professor Lee's undergraduate supervisor, which makes it interesting to see the synergy between a great scholar and a rising researcher.

Meanwhile, LG AI Research also recruited one of the world’s top 10 AI scientists, Professor Honglak Lee from the University of Michigan (US), as a CSAI (Chief Scientist of AI). Since LG AI Research’s establishment in December 2020, the number of employees quickly increased from 70 to 190 in just one year.

The results proved the success of the LG AI Research’s investment in talented members. They solved 18 cases of affiliate-related problems and presented 18 papers on ‘reinforcement learning on optimal route’ and ‘composer AI’ that were selected by top international AI conferences, such as the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) and NeurIPS.

Moreover, LG AI Research debuted EXAONE, a super-giant AI with the best machine learning capacity in South Korea, on December 2021 and presented ‘Tilda’, an AI artist developed using EXAONE, at New York Fashion Week on February this year.

An official from LG AI Research said, “In order to increase our AI research capacity, we are going to continue recruiting researchers and excellent AI specialists from all over the world” and expressed strong will for outstanding AI talents.
