LG AI Research Recognized as a Leader of Ethics in AI Research

On December 14, LG AI Research won the grand prize at the first Good AI Awards. The awards were held in the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies for the first time this year. The purpose of this event is to discover and award AI developers that have commercialized AI with outstanding performances while fulfilling high ethical standards.

Hosted by the International Association for Artificial Intelligence and Ethics and artificial intelligence-specialized publisher The AI, it was held with the objective to promote sound growth of the AI industry. The awards were judged by a panel of 11 reputable AI specialists who lead the Korean AI industry.

LG AI Research won the grand prize, receiving the highest scores in both areas of technology and ethics. AI Artist Tilda of LG also received the special prize, making LG the winner of two prizes.

LG AI Research was especially recognized for its technical prowess, with the research and development of the super-giant AI, EXAONE as well as applying it in the real industry. The company was also highly praised for its fundamental research that achieved constant outcomes; 47 papers were presented at the global top-tier AI conferences this year, following 18 papers the previous year.

Furthermore, the “Principles of AI Ethics” of LG AI Research that was announced last August, consisting of five core values — Humanity, Fairness, Safety, Accountability, and Transparency — for developing responsible AI, were also recognized as contributions to AI ethics. The company's proactive efforts to ensure ethical research were also acknowledged, such as the establishment of an “AI Ethical TF” for the actual application of ethics principles at work, development of “Explainable AI (XAI),” and an “AI Ethics Working Group,” a consultative group that discusses ethical issues.

AI Artist Tilda, who works for the coexistence of humans and AI, was highly recognized for addressing the issue of climate change to the world. Conveying a critical social message in an extraordinary way to attract more attention earned higher points. Tilda created patterns to warn about climate change. The collection designed by Tilda was unveiled at the 2022 F/W New York Fashion Week.

LG AI Research which was recognized as the most ethical AI company by accredited AI experts through this event carries out various activities to actively practice ethical AI research, such as coming up with the Principles of AI Ethics last year.
