On November 24, LG AI Research signed a letter of intent (LOI) with UNESCO at LG Science Park, Seoul, to implement and promote the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This groundbreaking partnership aims to foster knowledge and awareness of the Ethics of AI.
The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Kyunghoon Bae, the chief of LG AI Research, Mr. Youchul Kim the leader of X-unit, Mr. Myoungshin Kim, the AI Principal Policy Officer at LG AI Research and UNESCO officials, including Ms. Soohyun Kim, Director of UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau.
UNESCO contributes to peace and security by promoting international cooperation in education, sciences, culture, communication, and information as a specialized agency of the United Nations.
In particular, UNESCO elaborated the world’s most comprehensive international framework to shape the ethical development and deployment of AI technologies. The protection of human rights and dignity is the cornerstone of the Recommendation, based on the advancement of fundamental principles such as transparency and fairness. The Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence was adopted by acclamation by 193 Member States at UNESCO’s General Conference in November 2021.
LG AI Research announced AI ethics principles in 2022, to build more responsible AI systems and has been implementing ‘AI Impact Assessment TF’ and ‘AI Ethics Working Group’ for developing ethical AI which adds more value to customers’ life beyond technology.
This partnership is the first of its kind, where UNESCO has partnered with a Korean company to promote the ethics of AI.
The partnership between LG AI Research and UNESCO signifies a shared dedication to advancing AI technologies that contribute to both humanity and sustainable development. It looks forward to foster capacity building in both private and public sectors through the creation of AI ethics Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and diverse educational materials. Moreover, LG AI Research and UNESCO will collaborate on impactful visibility events to promote awareness of the Recommendation on the Ethics of AI. The partnership will also jointly promote the implementation of UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of AI including its global policy instruments - readiness and ethical impact assessment tools – and explore and advocate effective governance models to ensure data privacy and security.
