LG AI Research attended Neural Information Processing Systems, or NeurIPS, 2023, the world’s most prestigious AI conference and the largest conference on neural information processing systems. Now in its 37th year, NeurIPS 2023 selected a total of 3,584 research papers, and was attended by researchers from all around the world.
LG AI Research attended the conference with a variety of activities for attendees to try. The team’s booth showcased LG Group’s research achievements so attendees could experience them directly, and they also held “LG AI Day,” a knowledge networking event that only LG could pull off. Here’s what they had to say about the conference!

Expo Demo & Expo Talk, a Place to Share Findings with Researchers from All around the World
At the Expo Demo and Expo Talk sessions held on the first day of the conference, LG AI Research, as well as many global companies, shared their latest research achievements and insights. Among these, Qualcomm gained a large amount of interest thanks to their live demonstration of a stable diffusion model that could run on a smartphone. They also showcased an example of video segmentation in their On-device Learning (ODL) model that makes it easy to set up virtual backgrounds for video conferencing or live streaming.

LG AI Research also showcased its research achievements through the Expo Demo and Expo Talk sessions. Moontae Lee, Advanced Machine Learning (AML) Lab leader, as well as members of the AML Lab, led the session, introducing EXAONE Universe developed by the AML Lab.
EXAONE Universe is an interactive AI service that helps researchers in specialized fields. In this session, titled “EXAONE Universe: Toward Mindful Language Modeling for Insights and Inspiration,” the presenters discussed how EXAONE Universe provides insights to researchers and how it can help with their research.
There was also time at the end of the session for researchers on-site to try out EXAONE Universe for themselves. We were able to hear from researchers around the world about their experiences with EXAONE Universe and how it has helped them in their research.
In the Expo Talk session that followed, Moontae Lee, Advanced ML Lab leader, presented “Large Language Models for Artificial Expert Intelligence.”

Global big tech companies such as Google DeepMind, Meta, Apple, Microsoft, and IBM also ran booths, shared results of their research, and actively recruited talented workers to their companies. Google DeepMind drew a lot of attention from researchers with their “Meet the Gemini Team” hour during booth time. Chief Scientist Jeff Dean was on the scene to talk to researchers and showcase the Gemini Team’s latest work.

Meta’s booth featured several demo zones for researchers to try out, and of the various demo items, the Audiobox demo stood out the most. Audiobox, Meta’s new audio generation technology, combines the user’s voice with text prompts to generate new voices, sound effects, and more. As users can use it to create their own sound effects, it is expected to be used in a variety of fields, from game music to education.

LG AI Day Paves the Way for Future AI Experts
One thing that could not be missed at NeurIPS 2023 was LG’s unique networking event, “LG AI Day.” LG AI Day is a networking event that brings together the top talented workers at the conference to share AI research trends and knowledge, as well as introduce LG Group’s research. This year’s LG AI Day was divided into two parts.

Part 1 began with an introduction to LG Group’s research. LG AI Research, LG Electronics, LG Energy Solution, LG Household & Health Care, and LG CNS each explained what kind of AI research they do and what technologies they utilize to create their products. Next came the “Spotlight Session,” a key point of LG AI Day. Seven students who attended LG AI Day were invited to explain their research and talk to the researchers on site. The students excitedly prepared their presentations, which fostered meaningful communication.

Part 2 was organized for both LG employees and students to participate and interact freely. This dinner networking session was aptly named “Research Jam” to match the vibe in New Orleans. Research Jam was a change from the traditional sit-down, table-by-table interaction. Participants were organized into standing tables with no assigned seats to allow for free-flowing communication, and information on the papers they submitted to NeurIPS 2023 and materials on their research topics were provided so they could learn about each other’s research.
At first it was a bit awkward, but as time went on, employees and students alike moved from table to table, discussing everything from research to personal academia concerns. With the shared empathy between AI researchers, the allotted time was not enough for all conversations.

One of the most impressive aspects of LG AI Day was seeing students, who met at the event, visit each other’s poster sessions to hear their presentations and cheer them on. LG AI Day was not only made to promote LG Group’s technology, but also to promote networking among researchers and to inject good feelings into the community.
This year’s NeurIPS 2023 offered a glimpse into innovations in various AI fields that will have a greater impact on our lives. LG AI Research will continue to conduct research to enrich our lives and share our research results at various conferences.
