The First Summer Internship 2024 Has Begun!

LG AI Research is expanding overseas recruitment. Our hunt started with our newly launched “Summer Internship,” a program to recruit master’s and doctoral students from overseas universities. We began recruiting applicants for the “Summer Internship 2024” program in January, and after rigorous document screening, coding tests, and technical interviews, we selected the program’s very first interns. Introducing LG AI Research’s “Summer Internship” program, slated to be held every year!






What is the “Summer Internship” Program?

LG AI Research has been operating the “Research Internship” program continuously to recruit talented individuals in major research areas. The program led to actual hiring by sharing insights into the latest AI technologies with talented master’s and doctoral students in the country and conducting research to improve the utilization of AI technologies in real-world business environments.

This year, we launched our first Summer Internship to engage with global AI talent beyond Korea. We have selected the best time for overseas university students to participate in the Summer Internship program during their summer vacation period which includes relocation support and an intensive research program. The rich infrastructure, diverse data, and the opportunity to work with top experts have attracted many applicants.

“Summer Internship 2024” Has Now Begun!

The “Summer Internship 2024” program started recruiting applicants in January, and the interns were selected after rigorous document screenings, coding tests, and technical interviews. What courses are available during the three-month June-August “Summer Internship 2024” program?

First, we host an onboarding process to help students quickly adapt to the research culture at LG AI Research and immerse themselves in research. On the day the students arrive, there is an Internship Orientation where they receive an introduction to the “Summer Internship 2024” program and have a 1:1 meeting with their research mentor to discuss research topics and future research directions.

There are also a variety of other activities. The program includes an LG Innovation Gallery Tour, which provides a glimpse of the latest technologies in each of LG Group’s businesses, and a launch ceremony in which each person announces their plans for research for the duration of the program. The launch ceremony created an electric atmosphere, and the expectations of the interns participating in the “Summer Internship 2024” program added to their excitement about conducting research.

Six interns were selected for the “Summer Internship 2024” program. For three months, these interns will work with LG AI Research to apply their master’s and doctoral research into real-world business environments and interact with senior and fellow researchers to generate insight into their areas of research.


Q. Why did you apply for “Summer Internship 2024”?

Mrigi Munjal (Ph.D Candidate, Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

I heard about LG AI Research through their submitted work at NeurIPS 2023 workshop (AI4Mat). I was excited to see their focus on AI for battery materials and I reached out to the team to learn more about an internship possibility! I look forward to learning from a fabulous team of researchers at the intersection of AI and Materials Science. I also look forward to improving my skills and broadening my understanding of text encodings for battery materials.


Q. Expectations and preparation for the “Summer Internship 2024” program.

Kihyun Kim (Ph.D Candidate, Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

I have joined the RLHF Squad of the Advanced ML Lab through this internship program. As a Ph.D. candidate in EECS at MIT, I have been conducting theoretical research in areas such as reinforcement learning, control, and optimization. My research goal during this internship is to analyze the limitations of existing RLHF algorithms and propose new ones.
I hope this opportunity allows me to take a step beyond the theoretical research I have been doing at school by fine-tuning large language models using real datasets and experiencing various practical issues, thereby broadening my perspective. Additionally, I look forward to gaining insights by communicating with the excellent researchers in various fields at LG AI Research. Although three months is not a long period to perfectly complete a project, I will do my best to achieve good results.

I am truly impressed the way LG AI Research has built a spectacular environment for researchers to thrive. I am grateful to be surrounded by bright colleagues and work on interesting hard problems that can make a real impact. I am truly thrilled to give my all this summer on cracking the code of Riemannian diffusion.


Q. What research do you plan to continue during the “Summer Internship 2024” program?

Younghun Lee (Ph.D Candidate, Purdue University)

During my internship this summer, I’ll be working primarily on the safety alignment of Large Language Models (LLMs). The use of LLMs has recently increased, and the safety of generated texts has become an important issue. In my research, I’m focusing on defining various types of safety, such as toxicity, illegal activity, political bias, and moral/social norms, and proposing a pipeline to generate safety-infused preference data so that future LLMs can learn various categories of safety. Furthermore, I plan to research how safety-infused preference data can be learned more effectively than existing reinforcement learning methods.


Sangwook Kim (Ph.D Candidate, University of Toronto)

I’ve been conducting all my research in hospitals since I was an undergraduate student as well as now in graduate school. While thinking about how various kinds of data collected in hospitals should be delivered to clinicians in certain forms, I’ve always thought that the way AI models can be used realistically must be solved in hospitals.
However, recently, I’ve seen that large-scale models trained using massive amounts of data are actually proving effective in many studies in hospitals, and I thought that it’d be possible to continue researching for the same goal in companies that aren’t necessarily hospitals. This summer, I’ll be working in the Multimodal Lab for research on the utility and effectiveness of combining pathology images with language models. Specifically, my goal is to develop multimodal language models that combine pathology images with large-scale language models to improve the utility of AI models in real-world clinical settings. Ultimately, I’d like to contribute to the robustness of these models by creating a precise evaluation system for pathology multimodal models developed this way.


Jungho Hwang (M.S. Candidate, New York University)

I am excited to begin my internship as a member of the Bio Squad at the Materials Intelligence Lab. During this internship, I plan to utilize the experimental data from the Mouse Model provided by The Jackson Lab to integrate AI technology and predict Alzheimer's based on genotypes, as well as elucidate the mechanisms of the disease. Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia and is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-beta and tau proteins. The complex interplay of various genetic and environmental factors has made it challenging to accurately understand the pathological mechanisms of Alzheimer's.
I am pleased to be conducting this research at LG AI Research through this internship and feel honored to have the opportunity to contribute to uncovering the intricate pathological mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease through AI technology. I will strive to apply my experience and domain knowledge in electronics, computer science, and cybersecurity to the bio domain, aiming to significantly aid future research and medical advancements!
