‘LG Aimers’ has continued to grow, surpassing 12,000 participants

LG AI Research is committed to nurturing the next generation of AI experts. The 5th LG Aimers, a youth AI talent development program, has successfully concluded, providing learning opportunities to over 12,000 young people. Through the program, young people receive comprehensive education covering both theory and practice and have the opportunity to grow into future AI experts alongside LG affiliates.

LG Aimers was launched in the second half of 2022 with the goal of educating 4,000 individuals annually. By offering graduate-level AI courses and opportunities to participate in hackathons, the program supports participants in rapidly growing into AI experts. Particularly, hackathons allow participants to gain hands-on experience by tackling real-world tasks using data from LG affiliates. The program's popularity among aspiring AI experts is a testament to its effectiveness in developing the talent required to drive future AI innovation.

A thrilling 24-hour hackathon for the 5th LG Aimers took place at LG Academy in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do, on the 28th. 104 participants from 27 teams who had advanced from the online preliminary round competed fiercely.

The challenge for this hackathon was to "Develop a real-time production quality improvement model using digital twin technology." Digital twin technology is an innovative technology that collects data from manufacturing sites in real-time and conducts simulations in a virtual environment. This enables everything from process design to problem prediction. This particular challenge was based on a real-world industrial problem where the correlation between product defects and process inspection data was low, making prediction difficult even in actual industrial settings. Participants utilized data collected from actual LG Electronics factories to develop AI models, gaining practical experience in the process.

Various benefits will be provided to the teams that excel in the hackathon. First, the top three teams (Grand Prize awarded by the Minister of Employment and Labor, Excellent Prize awarded by the president of LG AI Research, and other prizes) will be granted exemptions from the document screening process when applying for jobs at LG. Additionally, all finalists will receive a total of 100 million won in training subsidies. The final winners will be selected after a review process following the competition, and the award ceremony is scheduled for October in Magok, Seoul.

On the second day of the hackathon, a job fair was held with the participation of five affiliates (LG AI Research, LG Electronics, LG Household & Health Care, LG Uplus, and LG CNS). Finalists had the opportunity to receive one-on-one personalized counseling from LG's recruitment consultants at this job fair and register for the LG AI talent pool, giving them priority consideration for future recruitment. Participants with various concerns related to recruitment, such as document, interview preparation and career choices, were able to obtain practical advice for their career path by discussing with LG's talent team at the booth.


Nurturing AI experts through practical problem-solving

The LG Aimers 5th Hackathon concluded with presentations from the teams that made it to the final list. After two days of hackathon, a comprehensive evaluation of final scores, algorithms, and presentations selected the top three teams: 1st place "My LG," 2nd place "Republic of Korea," and 3rd place "Quadbit."

The 1st place team, "My LG," proposed the applicability and scalability of the AI model built through the competition to the actual field. In addition, analyzing the process time data was an important factor in developing a robust model. The members of the "My LG" team said, "When we first received the field data, we were overwhelmed by the complexity and many variables, but through teamwork and efforts to analyse data and improve model performance, we were able to achieve good results."

The "Republic of Korea" team took second place by building a pipeline using deep learning and machine learning models. In particular, the team received high praise for building a broadly applicable model and proposing various improvement suggestions for the field by utilizing industrial engineering knowledge. The "Republic of Korea" team concluded by saying, "The most valuable experience in the 5rh Aimers hackathon was developing an AI model using real-world process data."

LG Aimers is open to anyone between the ages of 19 and 29 who has basic AI knowledge and coding skills. The program is held twice a year during the summer and winter breaks to accommodate academic schedules. LG AI Research plans to continue supporting young people so they can open up a better future through AI technology. Applications for the 6th LG Aimers will open soon.
