Interview with Jiyul Ham, Joohyeok Jeon, and Junbo Jang
Jiyul Ham (1st Place, 2nd LG Aimers)
"LG Aimers was the best opportunity that turned my doubts into conviction." Jiyul Ham
Q. What is the most significant thing you gained through the LG Aimers?
LG Aimers was the starting point for AI research and a valuable opportunity to experience the actual problem-solving process. Beyond simple modeling, I was able to develop the ability to deeply understand real-world problems and solve them through thorough consideration. Additionally, I gained valuable relationships by growing alongside colleagues who shared similar concerns.
Q. You have each experienced winning and shown growth. What was the biggest secret to winning the hackathon?
Data analysis based on domain knowledge and designing an optimized ensemble model that effectively combined the strengths of each individual model, considering their features, were key success factors. Above all, the persistence and strong execution of the team members, who did not give up until the end, were the core of our victory.
Q. What are your future goals?
My goal is to become an AI researcher who helps with practical decision-making in the field through multimodal AI technology encompassing smart factories and robotics. Currently, I am expanding my research into anomaly detection based on 2D RGB and 3D point clouds, and prompt-based detection and control.
Q. Do you have any advice for students applying to LG Aimers?
If you are wondering, "Is this path right for me?", I encourage you to delve deeper and find your direction. LG Aimers was the best opportunity that turned my doubts into conviction. Through the LG Job Fair and offline hackathons, you can also meet valuable colleagues to grow with, so I highly recommend giving it a try.
Joohyeok Jeon (1st Place, 3rd LG Aimers)
"LG Aimers opened my eyes to my future vision." Joohyeok Jeon
Q. What is the most significant thing you gained through the LG Aimers?
LG Aimers opened my eyes to my future vision. Before LG Aimers, even as a university student with a major, I hadn't concretized my dreams. However, through the process of designing and implementing AI models based on real data in the LG Aimers program, I directly experienced that AI positively impacts reality, and I developed a goal of contributing to a better world with AI.
Q. You have both experienced winning and shown growth. What was the biggest secret to winning the hackathon?
I created my own AI modeling methodology. Through the hackathon, I met team members with diverse backgrounds and tried to integrate their knowledge and skills with my own capabilities. I concretized these experiences one by one, building my skills, and this process led to the result of winning.
Q. What are your future goals? ?
My goal is to showcase my AI capabilities to the world. I have proven my skills by winning 15 AI competitions so far, and although I have applied to various companies to utilize these skills, I have not yet received interview opportunities except for internship positions. Although it is a difficult path, I hope that one day I will work with a company that recognizes my potential and create the "highest accuracy AI," which I have always mentioned in award interviews, to positively impact the world.
Q. Do you have any advice for students applying to LG Aimers?
I believe that LG Aimers is a valuable opportunity to objectively verify and grow your capabilities by handling real-world company data. I also learned and grew a lot within it, so I hope you will seize this opportunity without regret.
Junbo Jang (1st Place, 3rd Aimers; Grand Prize, 5th LG Aimers)

"I believe that effort and challenge are not just means but meaningful goals in themselves." Junbo Jang
Q. What is the most significant thing you gained through the LG Aimers?
I gained through LG Aimers are experience close to real-world practice and career advice. When I shared my concerns about my career path with Aimers guardians, they gave me truly generous advice that was very helpful. Also, by directly handling data close to real-world applications, I was able to gain experience in solving actual industry problems.
Q. You have both experienced winning and shown growth. What was the biggest secret to winning the hackathon?
I think it was the difference in the perspective of looking at the problem and our team's unique approach to it. From a data perspective, we clearly defined the problem in our own way, and I think we achieved good results by proposing a unique and impactful idea in the solution method that matched our definition.
Q. What are your future goals?
My goal is to become an all-in-one talent who can handle everything from planning to development end-to-end, someone essential to a company. In particular, I want to become a specialist with in-depth expertise in the manufacturing process field, solving various problems in the field and actually making a difference.
Q. Do you have any advice for students applying to LG Aimers?
I believe that effort and challenge are not just means but meaningful goals in themselves. You may get tired and fall sometimes, but that spot can also be a new starting point. I hope you will be proud of yourself for becoming stronger through the process of constantly challenging, falling, and getting back up. I sincerely support your choices. Fighting!
